Changeouts & Downsizing

Downsizing jewelry involves replacing the initial long bars with shorter bars to prevent complications and promote healing.

  • The longer bar allows room for swelling and prevents the jewelry from potentially embedding during the initial healing process. Once the swelling subsides you will need to downsize the jewelry. This will typically happen around the 6 week mark. Oral piercings heal much faster and may be ready to downsize within the first month.

  • Typical signs include:

    • Reduced swelling.

    • Jewelry is loose and shifts easily.

    • Visible bar length outside the piercing.

If you are still unsure, come into the shop for a free consultation.

    • There is a $10 fee for downsizing which covers the cost of the new shorter bar.

    • Changeouts are free with the purchase of jewelry, otherwise there is a $10 setup fee.

    • Snagging & irritation bumps - The jewelry will catch more easily on hair, clothing, and bedding. This can cause trauma to the tissue and form irritation bumps. It could also involuntarily remove the jewelry.

    • Migration - Too much space will allow the jewelry to shift, altering the angle of your piercing.

    • Discomfort and piercing failure - Repeated trauma will not allow the piercing to heal properly. Long term effects can include scarring, tissue and gum damage.

Remember…

Downsizing does not mean your new piercing is healed. Because of that, downsizing will need to be done with your piercer in a sterile environment.

*This will also give you an opportunity to discuss any complications you may be having and allow your piercer to ensure your piercing is healing properly.

*I will only downsize with jewelry available in the shop as it has already been pre-sterilized.
